School District joins RCMP Safe Place Program

The Comox Valley RCMP has launched the Safe Place Program. This program creates a partnership between local businesses and the RCMP to provide a place for victims or witnesses of crimes involving the LGBTQ community to call police and wait for officers to arrive.

The goal of this program is to provide security and safety to the LGBTQ community when they may be apprehensive about calling police to report a crime.

Safe Place Info Sheet

“Many crimes involving our LGBTQ community are not reported. We want all members of our community to feel safe coming to the police with any concerns by providing them with a safe place to do so” says Cst. Monika Terragni, Safe Place liaison officer for the Comox Valley RCMP.

As a Safe Place partner,  the school district signed a pledge agreeing to educate employees about the program, to provide a safe place to call police and to allow callers to stay until officers arrive. Safe Place locations are identified by a poster and/or sticker to display in a visible location on the front of their facility.

Interested businesses and/or organizations wishing to learn more about the program or to join are asked to contact Cst. Monika Terragni at (250) 338-1321.
