Clerical Staff go Back to School

In preparation for a new school year ahead, the clerical staff at Comox Valley Schools went back to school for their own training and mentorship day.
More than 50 of the district's clerical team gathered  in the Mark R. Isfeld multi-purpose room for the annual Summer Institute to share information valuable to their profession and in their significant role in public education. Most importantly, the session gave an opportunity to have a voice in expressing their desires and ideas of enhancing the workplace, and to seek clarity and knowledge on how to effectively support the school district through the important work they provide.
Following a warm welcome-back Meet and Greet over a deliciously nutritious breakfast, attendees received an inspiring opening session with Dean Lindquist, Superintendent of Comox Valley Schools, on Re-imagine Organizational Culture in which the topic of connectedness was discussed and the relevance shared values has on moving the district forward from being simply good to great.
"The magnitude of influence the clerical staff have on organizational culture is monumental because you interact and connect with almost every other community in the school system," expressed Sheila Powell, the session facilitator and Manager of Human Resources.
Lindquist echoed a similar sentiment encouraging clerical staff to recognize their influence within the district because of the pivotal role in public education and to be aware of their ability to change the story of their workplace. "What is your story?"
The half-day session ended with a panel discussion among some of the district's senior leadership and senior clerical staff who had made themselves available to respond to queries ranging from payroll, finance, facility operations, and information technology to Student Services, Indigenous Education and the Internal Student Program.
The annual Summer Institute, which is organized by the Clerical Training and Mentorship Advisory Committee has been running for more than a decade.
