The 80 credits include 52 credits for required courses (including 8 credits of Career Education courses) and a minimum of 28 elective credits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Required Courses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Credits must be earned in the following subject areas or courses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Language Arts 10 &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>A Language Arts 11 &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>A Language Arts 12 &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>A Social Studies 10 &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>A Social Studies 11 or 12 &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>A Mathematics 10 &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>A Mathematics 11 or 12 &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>A Science 10 &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>A Science 11 or 12 &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>Physical and Health Education 10 &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>An Arts Education and\/or an Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies 10, 11, or 12 &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>Career Life Education &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>Career Life Connections &#8211; (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>Indigenous-focused course(s) &#8211; (4 credits)*starting 2022\/2023 school year &#8211; this requirement will be met by grade 11 students taking <strong>English First Peoples \u2013 Literary Studies + New Media 11<\/strong> or <strong>English First Peoples \u2013 Literary Studies + Writing 11\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/assets\/gov\/education\/kindergarten-to-grade-12\/support\/graduation\/indigenous_grad_requirement_detailed_overview.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(link to detailed overview)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A list of all courses that may be used to satisfy these requirements is found in the online <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bced.gov.bc.ca\/datacollections\/course_registry_web_search\/search-home.en.php\">Course Registry<\/a>. Information about options for satisfying the requirements for Fine Arts and\/or Applied Skills (4 credits) is found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/education-training\/k-12\/administration\/legislation-policy\/public-schools\/fine-arts-and-applied-skills-requirements-in-the-graduation-program\">Fine Arts and Applied Skills Requirements in the Graduation Program Policy<\/a> and in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/education-training\/k-12\/administration\/program-management\/graduation#handbook\">Handbook of Procedures for the Graduation Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Electives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students must complete a minimum of 28 <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/education-training\/k-12\/administration\/legislation-policy\/glossary#elective_credit\">elective credits<\/a>. These 28 credits may be from Ministry-authorized or <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/education-training\/k-12\/support\/graduation\/getting-credit-to-graduate\/board-authority-authorized-courses\">Board\/Authority Authorized (BAA) courses<\/a>, post-secondary courses or <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/education-training\/k-12\/administration\/legislation-policy\/glossary#external_credentials\">external credentials<\/a>, but not Locally Developed courses. Once the credits for required courses have been met, additional courses in that subject area count as elective credits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Provincial Graduation Assessments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students must write a provincial Graduation Numeracy Assessment (GNA) and a provincial Graduation Literacy Assessment (GLA) in order to graduate. The first administration of the Graduation Literacy Assessment will be in 2019\/20.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Capstone Project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Capstone Project is a culminating presentation that will allow students the opportunity to showcase and demonstrate their journey of discovery during their time at Highland. Students will be expected to reflect on their school and community experiences that have helped shape who they are.
