We will commit to reviewing it regularly at student meetings, Parent Advisory Council, and staff meetings. We will also ask for feedback from the community. We will update it as necessary and as we learn and grow together.<\/p>\n<p>Hornby Island Community School is a public school. We embrace uniqueness and the wealth that can come with a variety of perspectives and life experiences. That said, to ensure the comfort of those within our school community and to create a viable learning environment, we also need an awareness of behaviours that will be accepted and unaccepted by our community when we are together and when we represent our school in the community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bced.gov.bc.ca\/sco\/guide\/scoguide.pdf#page=21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The British Columbia Safe and Orderly Schools document<\/a> outlines features of the school code of conduct.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is expected the Code of Conduct for our school is followed while at school, a school-related activity,\u00a0or in other circumstances where engaging in the activity will have an impact on the school environment.\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Code of Conduct is broken into 3 pieces:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Respect for Self<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Respect for Others<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Respect for Property<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Within each section are examples of what expected behaviours are, and are not.<\/p>\n<p>It is very rare positive behaviour strategies are ineffective at correcting behaviour not in alignment with\u00a0our Code of Conduct. However,\u00a0some children require\u00a0additional\u00a0support in\u00a0 understanding\u00a0their\u00a0behavioural responsibility in a public space, and the\u00a0impact on those around them, and the shared\u00a0learning environment.\u00a0All children are considered as individuals\u00a0in a caring manner based on their age\/stage and capacity for understanding our learning community expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Progressive\u00a0disciplinary actions will be taken\u00a0depending on the frequency and\u00a0severity\u00a0of behaviours not in accordance with\u00a0our School District #71 and Hornby Island Community School Code of Conduct.\u00a0Parents and students sign their names indicating their understanding of our Code of Conduct each year. Consequences and\/or disciplinary actions will remain confidential unless there are\u00a0unique circumstances where information is required to be shared with a larger audience.<\/p>\n<p>Behaviours relating to\u00a0bullying of all forms (including cyber-bullying),\u00a0harassment, intimidation, threatening or violent behaviours while at school, at a school-related activity, or in other circumstances where engaging in the activity will have an impact on the school environment,\u00a0will require deeper levels of intervention and consequence.\u00a0\u00a0Illegal\u00a0acts such as possession, use or distribution of illegal or restricted substances, possession or use of a weapon, or theft of or damage to property\u00a0will\u00a0be investigated\u00a0by teachers,\u00a0school administration, School District Administration, and where necessary the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), to ensure our learning space is a safe and supported learning environment and our community assets are protected for future learners.\u00a0Our learners are expected to arrive\u00a0at our school\u00a0ready to learn and to contribute to a positive learning environment.\u200b<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bced.gov.bc.ca\/sco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The BC Ministry of Education also provides additional resources<\/a><span class=\"ms-rteThemeFontFace-2\">\u00a0for guiding the creation of the Code of Conduct and Safe, Caring, Orderly Schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"conduct-title\">Respect for Others<\/h3>\n<div class=\"conduct-section\">\n<p><strong class=\"conduct-subtitle\">If people in our school are respecting themselves it will&#8230;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"conduct-subsection\">\n<p><strong>Look Like<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inviting and including others<\/li>\n<li>Smiling<\/li>\n<li>Waving<\/li>\n<li>Reading others&#8217; feelings and reacting accordingly<\/li>\n<li>Being safe so others&#8217; don&#8217;t get hurt (e.g.walking in the halls, careful risk-taking on the playground)<\/li>\n<li>Accepting the rights of others;\u00a0race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, gender identity or expression\u00a0and age .<\/li>\n<li>Working together &#8211; cooperation<\/li>\n<li>Respecting personal space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"conduct-subsection\">\n<p><strong>Sound Like<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Laughing<\/li>\n<li>Kind words<\/li>\n<li>School appropriate language<\/li>\n<li>Offering to help others<\/li>\n<li>Giving compliments<\/li>\n<li>Greeting each other with kind words<\/li>\n<li>Disagreeing using kind words<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"conduct-subsection\">\n<p><strong>Feel Like<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Comfort\/relaxed<\/li>\n<li>Happy<\/li>\n<li>Confident<\/li>\n<li>Safe<\/li>\n<li>Others support you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width: 200px; margin: 35px auto 30px auto;\" \/>\n<div class=\"conduct-section\">\n<p><strong class=\"conduct-subtitle\">When people are disrespectful of others it&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"conduct-subsection\">\n<p><strong>Looks Like<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discriminating against, making fun of, or criticizing others for their race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, gender identity or expression and age<\/li>\n<li>Bullying and cyberbullying<\/li>\n<li>Intimidating others<\/li>\n<li>Threatening others with words, gestures or physical actions<\/li>\n<li>Excluding others from games and activities<\/li>\n<li>Manipulating\/planning to leave others out or to make fun of them<\/li>\n<li>Deliberately provoking someone to encourage reaction<\/li>\n<li>Actions that could result in others being hurt physically or emotionally<\/li>\n<li>Violent behaviour toward others<\/li>\n<li>Disrupting the learning environment interrupting others&#8217; margin: 35px auto 30px auto;\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"conduct-title\">Respect for Property<\/h3>\n<div class=\"conduct-section\">\n<p><strong class=\"conduct-subtitle\">When people are showing respect for personal property and the belonging of others it&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"conduct-subsection\">\n<p><strong>Looks Like<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Taking care of their own supplies (e.g. put them away carefully in an organized way, hanging up coats etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Taking care of resources (e.g. computers, books, classroom supplies, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrating understanding that the materials and supplies people have cost money and sometimes have emotional value as well<\/li>\n<li>Picking up litter inside and outside of the school even if it isn&#8217;t yours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"conduct-subsection\">\n<p><strong>Sounds Like<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Saying respectful words about the things they have &#8220;I like my new coat. It was a gift and I know it cost my parents a lot of money I have to take care of it.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Appreciative words &#8220;We are lucky to have so many fun activities in our classroom!)<\/li>\n<li>Asking to borrow someone&#8217;s things e.g. &#8220;Could I borrow some of your felt pens?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"conduct-subsection\">\n<p><strong>Feels Like<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Organized<\/li>\n<li>Positive culture<\/li>\n<li>Appreciation for what we have<\/li>\n<li>Cooperation<\/li>\n<li>Caring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width: 200px;
