Languages

Mark R. Isfeld offers two language programs outside of French Immersion: Spanish and Core French (French as an Additional Language).

These courses offer a way to meet the additional language requirements that are set by many post-secondary institutions. A grade 8 level language course is usually required for a high school diploma, however many universities and colleges in B.C. and elsewhere require up to Grade 11 level language courses for their Arts and Sciences programs of study. Either French 11 or Spanish 11 will meet these requirements.

We currently offer Core French in grades 8, 9, 10, and 11, and Spanish in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. The number of students that select a course helps to determine if a course will be offered.

Learning languages helps with more than just communication in the target language. We work on skills such as constructing meaning when uncertain, recognizing patterns, adopting different cultural perspectives, listening actively and deciphering non-verbal cues. These abilities can influence many areas of learning and life outside of the language classroom.
