STEAM Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Instructor and Head Coach:<\/strong> Matt Sydor \u2013 <a href=\"mailto:Matt.Sydor@sd71.bc.ca\">Matt.Sydor@sd71.bc.ca<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Program Description<\/h3>\n<p>Robotics71 is a district-wide robotics program with a focus on building the engineering capacity of our students. This is a year-long program which will run after school to facilitate collaboration between all the local high schools and distance education students.<\/p>\n<p>This is a student-centered course where students will be designing, building, and coding robots to compete in the VEX V5 Robotics competitions, as well as some opportunities to learn how to use some new design and fabricating tools such as 3D printers and laser engravers.<\/p>\n<h3>Schedule<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Tuesdays and Thursdays: 4:00 p.m.\u20136:00 p.m.*<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>*Sometimes longer, especially in the build-up to tournaments.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Attendance and Course Credit<\/h3>\n<p>The Robotics71 program is a hands-on, participation-based course. Course credit can be granted for students who are in regular attendance, contribute meaningfully to their team\u2019s development, compete in at least one regional tournament, and keep an up-to-date Engineering Journal. Credit can be earned for Robotics 10\/11\/12, Engineering 11\/12, Mechatronics 12, and potentially others.<\/p>\n<p>Regular attendance is recommended but not required for those who want to join the club for experience, to make friends, or to build a robot to compete in regional tournaments.<\/p>\n<h3>Course Fees<\/h3>\n<p><strong>$275<\/strong> \u2013 to cover some travel expenses, consumable materials, and team T-shirts.<\/p>\n<h3>Marking<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Robot Development:<\/strong> 40%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engineering Journal:<\/strong> 20%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Community Contribution: 4<\/strong>0%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Safety<\/h3>\n<p>Safety is paramount in a shop environment, for everyone in the class. If a student is disruptive during safety training and\/or displays any unsafe behaviour in the shop, they will receive a warning. If this behaviour continues, removal from the shop may be necessary to avoid injury to themselves or others.<\/p>\n<h3>Respect<\/h3>\n<p>Highland\u2019s shops are safe spaces, and everyone is welcome. It is 2026, and we act accordingly. Disrespectful language and\/or behaviour is not tolerated.<\/p>\n<h3>Cell Phones<\/h3>\n<p>For District Robotics 9\u201312, we are lucky enough to have team computers at our disposal. Cell phone use will not be required and will align with our school policy: no phones are to be out during class time unless approved by the instructor or substitute teacher. Improper phone use will result in a warning, repeated improper phone use will result in confiscation for a day or possibly contact home.<\/p>\n<h3>Plagiarism\/Cheating<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cSteal from the best, invent the rest.\u201d Collaboration is essential in an ever-changing environment like robotics. \u201cBorrowing\u201d a working bit of code to test a theory is standard practice; \u201cborrowing\u201d an entire code you don\u2019t understand to run your bot is cheating. Students will be graded on work they have produced themselves and can explain upon request.<\/p>\n<h3>Core Competencies<\/h3>\n<p>Core Competencies are essential components of all courses and Robotics71 is no different:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Communication:<\/strong> The world needs people who can speak to the machines\u2026 learn their language to thrive in the digital age (and possibly save yourself in the coming robot apocalypse).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Creative and Critical Thinking:<\/strong> Failing fast and failing often requires some adapting to problems and creative solutions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personal and Social Responsibility:<\/strong> \u201cShop Culture\u201d is essential to any shared working space and building a positive shop culture means personal responsibility in cleaning up after yourself and leaving the space better than you found it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Unsure About Anything?<\/h3>\n<p>Please don\u2019t hesitate to ask Mr. Sydor for help, especially if you\u2019re unsure how to use a tool safely.
