Alternative and Augmentative Communication Speech-Language Pathologist
SD71 has a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who specializes in alternative and augmentative communication (AAC). The AAC SLP provides collaborative consultation with school teams and families to support students with significant communication challenges as they develop their skills. A variety of tools ranging from low-tech (e.g. picture symbols) to high-tech (e.g. communication devices or iPads with robust communication apps) are available and supported. The AAC SLP provides assessment of functional language skills, trials with a variety of communication systems and strategies, loans and ongoing technical support of equipment, contribution to program planning, staff training and support, and regular direct therapy with students.
The AAC SLP service aim is to provide communication systems to individual students, to support skill development for functional and independent communication, and to promote opportunities for their learning, social participation and agency.
