I am a visitor on the traditional, unceded territory of the K’omoks First Nation, having moved here as a child over 50 years ago. My Gramma, my Great Gramma and some of my Aunts, Uncles, and cousins on my Mom’s side of the family grew up here as well, so this is the place that I always call home. I have mixed ancestry including Norweigan, Scottish, French and Anishnabe. Unfortunately I didn’t see much of my Dad when I was growing up but I do know that On my Great Grandma was an Indigenous woman of Anishnabe heritage. I never got to meet her, but I have a picture of her with long dark braids, shiny dark skin and my Aunty Barb told me that she smoked a pipe! When I was growing up my family on my Dad’s side preferred to deny our Indigenous heritage, so I know vey little about her or my connection to that side of my family.
