Boozhoo, my name is Jeannine Walker (she/her), and I proudly carry and uphold the name Aabawasige, which means “one who shines warmly upon the people”. My ancestral roots branch out from the Anishinaabe and Cree peoples of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Minnesota, but I am registered to Tootinaowaziibeeng. I also carry Scottish and Norwegian ancestral ties within my bloodline and am adopted Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw and Wuikinuxv. I have been a guest on the traditional unceded territory of the Pentlatch, E’ikʷsən, Sahtloot and Sasitla peoples, also known as K’omoks, for almost 30 years and am deeply grateful to live within this beautiful territory.

I started my journey in the Comox Valley education system as a graduate, which led me to working as a cultural presenter, transitioning to an Indigenous Support Worker, and most recently attaining my teaching degree and being hired as an Indigenous Education Support Teacher. I look forward to continuing to deepen my relationships and strengthen connections in my work.
