Melanie Norris’s traditional name is Umelilakw, which means “Noble Princess.” Her mother is the late Joan Norris from; Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ  (Cape Mudge) Muska’makw Dzawada’enuxw (Kingcome Inlet),  her father is the late  Erny Norris from; Lyackson Mustimuhw, and Germany. Born and raised here in the Comox Valley, Melanie has always appreciated being surrounded by our forests and water and loves to spend time swimming and exploring.  She has been an active member of the Kumugwe dancers for 14 years and seeks out any opportunities to immerse herself in her culture. Her background is in Indigenous studies from Malaspina University (VIU) completing the Arts one program. Most recently Melanie has had experience working in Parliament (House of Commons), as a constituency assistant. And at Ladders to Kindness where I helped both in the office and training.  She is so grateful to have grown up on the land of the K’omoks people, where She also has lineage, so she has felt grateful to grow up with relatives. Melanie looks forward to working with all the students and parents over the next year.
