Good morning CCS community!
We hope this email finds you keeping cool in this late August heat wave. We’re busy getting ready for students to return next Wednesday for an amazing 2025-26 school year here at Cumberland, but we thought we would take a moment to send a communication to keep our families in the loop regarding what to expect next Wednesday, and to remind you about some important items (like school supplies). Let’s get to it then!
1. Next Wednesday, September 3rd is the first day of school and is a half day (8:50am -12:10pm).
2. Your child(ren)’s class placement will be sent out in the afternoon next Tuesday, September 2nd. Teaching staff undertook an extensive class placement process last May/June with the interests of making the best possible and most informed placements for all students. We strongly believe in upholding equity for all students, and for this reason we ask that parents please do not reach out to us regarding class placements unless there are extreme factors that they feel we must be made aware of. Thank-you in advance for this.
3. Families will be instructed where to bring their students next Wednesday morning in their class placement email. Teachers will be outside that morning lined up with clear signage indicating their name and division #. Last year we had our grade 1-3 students meet their teachers on the rear Strathcona (smaller elementary school) field, and grade 4-9 students met their teachers on the Beaufort (larger middle school) field. We would like to do this again, but there is still some uncertainty about how accessible the Strathcona field will be due to the construction. We will be sure to clarify in our email next Tuesday afternoon.
4. Kindergarten families have received communications regarding where/when to meet from gradual entry from our Vice Principal, Dan McKee. I have attached his communication in case you are a parent/guardian of a K student and you have missed this communication.
5. We have moved to a school-wide school supply system for all grades for the 2025-26 school year. For more information, including our staff’s reasons for moving to this system, please see the attached letter that was sent home with all students in June. Families can pay for their supplies ($50/student) starting now. Payments can be made in person at one of our offices by cash/cheque, or by e-transfer to ccs@sd71.bc.ca (if you choose to pay by e-transfer, please leave a short note indicating that the payment is for school supplies and your child(ren)’s names). We encourage families who may be experiencing financial difficulties to please reach out to us (or their teacher) so that we can help.
6. This is just a reminder that the considerable capital expansion construction project is fully underway on our Strathcona (elementary) side of our campus. This will affect drop off/pick up routines for our primary families. Parents will still be able to drop off at this site, but it will be changed from last year. We will send out a follow-up email with more information in the upcoming days, but if you think this will affect you, we would suggest that you pay the school a quick visit over the next week to take a look so that you aren’t surprised come next week.
7. If you are new to Cumberland Community School, and you require busing for your children/students, please visit the following link to register: https://www.comoxvalleyschools.ca/student-transportation/. Our grade 7 students coming to us from Royston should not need to register (it should have already been done as part of the transition process). Bus passes will be issued to students during the first weeks of school.
8. Our SD71 Inclusive Education department has asked us to pass along the following link to our families: https://inclusionbc.org/resource/parents-handbook-on-inclusive-education/
We hope this email gives you the basic information that you need to begin planning for next week’s return with your children.
We’re excited to see everyone, and we hope that everyone’s getting excited to return, and we’ll see you soon!
Thanks community!
