November is Self-Regulation Month

Core Competency Focus: Self-Regulation
This month, our Core Competency focus is self-regulation. Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage our emotions, thoughts, attention, and actions in different situations. It helps children stay calm when faced with challenges, make thoughtful choices, solve problems, and build positive relationships with others. Self-regulation is not about being perfect or always being in control. It is about recognizing our feelings and using strategies to help ourselves learn, play, and interact successfully.
Positive character traits such as respect, responsibility, perseverance, empathy, kindness, and patience play an important role in developing self-regulation. When students practice these traits, they learn to pause before reacting, consider the feelings of others, manage frustration, and make choices that support both their own well-being and the well-being of those around them.
Throughout the month, we will be exploring self-regulation in our classrooms and on the playground through discussions, learning activities, problem-solving opportunities, and daily interactions. We encourage families to join us in talking about emotions, coping strategies, and positive character traits at home as we work together to help students build these important lifelong skills.
