About Royston Elementary
Royston Elementary School draws students from the communities south of Courtenay including Fanny Bay, Union Bay and Royston. Royston Elementary is a kindergarten to grade six school with approximately two hundred and sixty students in 12 divisions in the 2024-25 school year.
It boasts a school garden, a StrongStart program, an onsite before/after school care program, and a highly dedicated staff and parent group committed to learning excellence.
Royston Elementary is also known as “Royston By the Sea” because we are located only a short walking distance away from the ocean (Baynes Sound). It is also known as ‘Tle-Tla-Tay’ in the Island Comox language. The meaning is “herring-raking place” named after a place on Gartley Point, and the traditional spelling is Ih’ét’Iha7t’ay.
The Royston Elementary library is full of excellent reading materials for all ages.
This is one of our two Kindergarten Rooms. We support play based learning at our school as students learn best through creative play, exploration and cooperative learning.
Royston Elementary School has a Learning Centre to support students with diverse needs.
Royston Elementary School has a wonderful music program and has a beautiful music room filled with a variety of instruments.
Royston Elementary has been a part of the community for over 60 years, but its facilities have been well maintained, updated and renovated throughout the years. Our gym is full sized and all students receive a daily fitness program.
At Royston Elementary students earn ‘raindrops’ for ‘filling each other’s buckets’ with kind words and actions. Once a month two student names are drawn at our Celebration of Success Assembly and these students get a reward.
Our PAC (Parent Advisory Council) is very active at our school. These dedicated parents run a hot lunch program for our students four days a week out of our school kitchen. Our PAC meetings are held at the school on the second Wednesday of each month (6:30 pm) (changed from Thursdays last year) and we encourage all parents and caregivers to attend.
Our school operates a StrongStart program open to all caregivers and pre-school aged children on Mondays and Wednesdays (changed from Friday last year) from 8:30 am to 11:30 am. For additional information about StrongStart programs across School District #71 click here: SD71 StrongStart. We also have a privately run onsite before and after school care. Feel free to phone the school for more information.
