​Field Trips: Industry field trips to residential construction job sites, commercial construction job sites, truss shop, etc.

NIC trade program sessions. Students may spend several days in the different NIC trades facilities working with NIC instructors.

​Application:​ ​Interested students should fill out a District Trades Sampler Application and note Construction Sampler for the program.
​Co-op portion: After the initial part of the program is complete and a few tours of industry taken, students will be set up on Work Experience 12A placements to make industry connection.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Construction Trade Sampler is a cohort group that is immersed into the many careers related to the construction industry. Students will explore interested career areas around the following trades: Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Roofing, Drywall, Flooring, Siding, Concrete and Painting.
The course is mainly “hands on” by building skills, knowledge and the right attitude that employers are looking for. There will be a focus on SkilledTradesBC (formerly the Industry Training Authority or ITA) essential skills, field trips to businesses that employ trades people, project building in the shop, and practical experiences with North  Island College Trades instructors. Drafting and math will be interspersed with day to day learning.

This course is open to all grade 11 and 12 students in the Comox Valley. Grade 10 students may be accepted.
