Comox Valley Schools Launching Public Engagement on Proposed Catchment Boundary Adjustments
Comox Valley Schools is initiating a public engagement process to consider proposed changes to the catchment boundaries for Brooklyn, Valley View, Aspen Park, and Airport elementary schools. This initiative aims to address increasing student enrollment across the district and ensure that all schools can provide safe, equitable, and accessible learning environments.
Importantly, no current students will be required to switch schools due to these changes, which will only apply to future enrollments. Special considerations will be made to support families with siblings and students with inclusivity needs.
With significant population growth in the Comox and East Courtenay areas, some schools are now reaching capacity, while others have room for additional students. To support balanced enrollment across these schools and optimize use of district facilities, boundary adjustments are being considered for the 2025-2026 school year.
“Our district is committed to proactively managing the growth in our communities,” said Board Chairperson Michelle Waite. “These proposed boundary changes aim to support sustainable enrollment, enhance access for students, and minimize disruptions for families.”
To ensure community voices are central to this decision-making process, Comox Valley Schools invites all parents, guardians, and community members to participate in an online Information and Interactive Feedback Portal from October 18 to November 8, 2024. Through the portal, families can view detailed boundary proposals, submit feedback, and ask questions.
Feedback gathered from the portal and community events will be summarized and presented at a Committee of the Whole meeting on November 12, 2024. Final recommendations are expected to go to the Board for approval in late November.
In recent years, rapid growth in specific areas has led to space pressures in some schools. Adjusting boundaries will allow the district to make the most efficient use of school facilities and resources. Key considerations in the proposal include current and projected enrollment data, transportation accessibility, and the need to maintain walkable, safe routes for students.
Timeline for the Process:
- October 18 – November 8: Information and Feedback Portal open to the public.
- October 22: Regular Public Board Meeting for information.
- November 12: Committee of the Whole meeting on community feedback themes.
- November 26: Regular Public Board Meeting – final Board review and potential approval.
On October 18, community members can access information about the proposed adjustments and participate in the feedback process by visiting: www.comoxvalleyschools.ca/catchment-updates
