New District Vice-Principal of Indigenous Education – Aabawasige (Jeannine Walker)
Comox Valley Schools is honoured to announce that Aabawasige, also known as Jeannine Walker, has been appointed as the new District Vice-Principal of Indigenous Education.
Jeannine is an Anishinaabe Kwe educator whose leadership is rooted in humility, accountability, and love for community. With a lifelong commitment to uplifting Indigenous students, families, and communities, Jeannine brings a wealth of experience, cultural knowledge, and passion to this role. Her work is grounded in relationship, land-based learning, and ceremony – foundations that guide her approach to culturally responsive and community-connected education.
Throughout her years of service, Jeannine has played a pivotal role in both district and community initiatives. She has helped lead and support powerful educational experiences such as the English First Peoples 11 Big House teachings, youth-led reconciliation gatherings, Indigenous grad celebrations, and medicinal plant walks. She is also a key member of the district’s Indigenous equity scan planning team, working to uphold and elevate Indigenous knowledge systems and student success.
Beyond the school district, Jeannine’s leadership with organizations like the Kumugwe Cultural Society, the Lil’ Red Dress Project, and Dawn to Dawn has supported community healing and cultural resurgence. Her contributions to events such as Walking with Our Sisters, Potlatch 67/67, Gukwas sa Wagalus, and National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations reflect her deep connection to place, protocol, and community voices.
Jeannine leads with compassion, cultural safety, cultural humility, and a strong sense of purpose. She believes in creating safe, welcoming, and culturally rich learning environments where students are seen, heard, and celebrated.
Please join us in welcoming Jeannine Walker to her new role. We look forward to the continued growth, strength, and brilliance she will help nurture in our schools and communities.
