February 12 Provincial Day of Mourning
Dear Comox Valley Schools Community,
Today, schools across British Columbia are observing a Provincial Day of Mourning to honour the many individuals, families, and communities impacted by the tragic events in Tumbler Ridge. Across Comox Valley Schools, our flags are lowered to half-mast, and our schools will acknowledge this day in thoughtful, age-appropriate, and trauma-informed ways that reflect the significance of this moment while prioritizing student well-being.
On this Provincial Day of Mourning and every day, Comox Valley Schools is unwavering in our dedication to our values of empathy, kindness, acceptance, safety, and inclusion. We encourage all members of our school community to support one another with compassion and care, recognizing that events such as these can affect people in different ways. Our schools remain places of belonging where every student and staff member is valued, respected, and supported.
Unfortunately, a surge of anti-trans, mental health, and 2SLGBTQ+ rhetoric and misinformation has emerged online and in communities. In response, I want to be clear and unequivocal: Comox Valley Schools stands firmly for the safety, dignity, and full inclusion of every student and staff member. Hate, discrimination, and harassment have no place in our schools. We remain committed to ensuring that all learning environments are safe, welcoming, and supportive spaces where every learner can thrive.
School teams have been provided with guidance to help them acknowledge the day in ways that prioritize student well-being, encourage respectful dialogue, and ensure that all students feel safe and included. Staff will also continue to share information about available mental-health and wellness supports for students and families who may need them.
During this time of reflection, we hold the Tumbler Ridge community and all those affected in our thoughts, and we reaffirm our shared commitment to fostering caring, inclusive, and supportive school environments for every member of our school community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jeremey Morrow
Superintendent
Comox Valley Schools
