Message of support for our school community

Dear Comox Valley Schools families,

As we learn more about the tragic events that unfolded in Tumbler Ridge yesterday our hearts are with the families, first responders, and the entire community affected by this devastating event.

While this incident took place far from the Comox Valley, we know that many families are impacted in our community. We also recognize that violence in any school setting is deeply concerning for all students, staff, and families. Today, schools are taking time to support students in age-appropriate ways. Educators are reminding students that it is normal for people to respond differently to difficult news and encouraging them to speak with a trusted adult if they have questions or feelings they would like to share, consistent with the guidance being used in classrooms.

School counsellors and staff are available to provide additional support for any student who may need it. If your child would benefit from extra care or if there are specific concerns you would like us to be aware of, please reach out to your school directly. Over the coming days or weeks, we encourage families to work with schools to be responsive to changes in their child’s behaviours that may indicate a need for additional supports.

At home, it can be helpful to check in with your child, listen to their questions, and reassure them that their school is a safe place where caring adults are present to support them each day.

We thank you for your partnership in supporting our students and school communities.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeremy Morrow
Superintendent
Comox Valley Schools
