Women Explore the Trades Event Inspires Students
Students from five secondary Comox Valley Schools recently participated in the Women Explore the Trades event at Glacier View Secondary School, a full day of hands-on learning, career discovery, and mentorship designed to encourage participants to explore pathways in the skilled trades.
Open to female students and students who identify as female in Grades 9 to 12, the event featured hands-on stations in automotive, carpentry, baking, heavy duty mechanics, forestry, plumbing, metalwork, electrical, and firefighting. Participants had the opportunity to try new skills, ask questions, and learn directly from women working in these fields.

“It’s really a meet and greet where students are making connections with community members and learning about pathways into the trades,” said Careers Coordinator Tammy Williamson. “They are hearing directly from employers about what industries are looking for and discovering opportunities like our dual-credit programs through NIC.”
Students also met a recent Youth Train in Trades graduate who demonstrated her wire-jewelry craft, offering a creative example of the precision and artistry involved in trades careers.
The event was made possible thanks to generous support from community and industry partners including Construction Foundation BC, Home Depot, Sinnott Electric, Erica’s Sweets and Things, Western Forest Products, North Island College, Oyster River Fire Hall, and Mount Washington. Their contributions helped create an engaging day that highlighted the range of opportunities available in trades careers.

Hosted by Comox Valley Schools in partnership with SkilledTradesBC Youth, Women Explore the Trades reflects the district’s commitment to empowering all learners to explore diverse pathways to success. The event supports the district’s focus on fostering confidence, curiosity, and real-world learning experiences across its educational programs.
The timing could not be better. November 24-28 is Careers Week in British Columbia, and the Comox Valley Schools Careers Teams have been busy preparing a full slate of activities and highlights showcasing the many career pathways available to students.
This event is one of many initiatives that help students build connections, gain practical experience, and feel inspired about their future possibilities. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a great success!
