Highland unveils new logo celebrating culture, learning and community

Highland Secondary School welcomed Elders, students, staff, alumni and community members together to celebrate the unveiling of a new school logo designed by former Highland graduate Długwayaxa̱lis Karver Everson.

The event featured a special performance by the Kumugwe Dancers, including six Highland former grads, helping create a powerful atmosphere of pride, culture and connection as the new logo was revealed.

Długwayaxa̱lis Karver Everson, who is Pentlatch, K’omoks and Kwakwakawakw created the logo to honour both Highland’s identity and its connection to local Indigenous culture and community. The design reflects the idea that schools are places where students seek knowledge, uncover truth and grow into their future selves while remaining connected to one another and to the land on which they learn.

Karver’s message about the logo says, “When creating the Highland logo, I wanted it to reflect its Kwak̓wala name, I’katsi “place up high.” The image of an eagle perched atop a house felt like a powerful way to embody this concept, symbolizing not just physical elevation, but also a higher way of thinking, teaching, learning, and living. I envision this place, and ourselves, as vessels of knowledge, where we uncover truth, expand our understanding, and grow in ways that transform who we are and how we perceive the world. The design also serves as a meaningful reminder of our ongoing connection to local Indigenous culture and community, and the importance of working together for the collective good.”

The logo serves as a reminder of the importance of creating meaningful connections between learning, culture and community.
