Trustee Elections

British Columbia general local government elections are held every four years, including the elections for the offices of School District Trustees. The next local government election general voting day is October 15, 2022.

Board Composition:

The Board of Education of School District No. 71 (Comox Valley) is comprised of 7 Trustees, covering six areas in the Comox Valley. Further information can be found in the Board’s Trustee Election Bylaw

Role of the Trustee:

The role of the trustee is to contribute to the Board as it conducts its legislated mandate. The oath of office taken by each trustee when they assume office binds that person to work diligently and faithfully in the cause of public education. A trustee must first be concerned with the interests of the School Board. As members of the corporate board, trustees are accountable to the public for the collective decisions of the Board, and for the delivery and quality of educational services.

Qualification for Office:

The overall qualifications for nomination, election and appointment are that the person meet the following requirements:

  • an individual who is, or will be on general voting day or effective date of appointment, age 18 or older;
  • a Canadian citizen;
  • a resident of British Columbia for at least six months before the date of the nomination, election, or appointment; and
  • not disqualified under the School Act or any other enactment from being nominated for, elected to, or holding office as trustee. [School Act, section 32 (1)]
